21st Century COE Program
Introduction
In FY2002, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) announced the results of its 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program, in which the Institute achieved selection in two areas of specific research. The Program, using a competitive principle based upon third-party evaluation, supports the formation of world-class centers of research. MEXT initiated the program in 2002 to promote outstanding, internationally competitive universities. It invited university presidents across Japan to submit doctorate-level research proposals. Third parties evaluated the proposals by research field, and MEXT provided grants to the selected institutions. The 21st Century COE Program Committee, administered principally by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, is in charge of the external evaluation and judging.
