Diversity
Outstanding young researchers with a proven track record in cutting-edge research at universities, and private sector research institutes are recruited. Currently, about half of the professors and associate professors have research experience at national or other research institutes, private sector companies or research facilities overseas. Overall, the faculty is extremely diverse as indicated in the table below, and this diversity serves as a driving force for the vitalization of NAIST's research.

Introduction of the fixed-term appointment system
It is especially important to have diverse human resources in order to implement advanced, interdisciplinary and comprehensive research and education at the university. A fixed-term appointment system for faculty members was introduced in June, 1998. Vitalization of research and education is being promoted by enhancing the mobility of the faculty.
