Teaching Assistant (TA) Program

NAIST actively supports students by providing opportunities for them to assist in teaching and education and receive financial assistance. TAs help in areas such as preparing teaching materials (collecting and sorting of materials), grading reports as well as experimental assistance.
Students in the second year of the Master’s Program and students of Doctoral Program are eligible for this scheme.

Number of participants: 340
Compensation; 22-473 hours/year (1,200-1,400yen/hour )
The number of hours and hourly compensation depend on the course, graduate school and budgetary measures, and not uniform.

Research Assistant (RA) Program

The RA program was introduced in 1996 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) with the aim of enabling outstanding students of the Doctoral Program to participate as RAs in research project.
NAIST outpaced all other universities nationwide in introducing an RA program in 1997 using its own independent funding sources. Further enhancement and reinforcement of the RA program is being promoted in combination with the MEXT RA program introduced in 1998.

Compensation: 47-384 hours/year (1,400yen/hour)
The number of hours fluctuates depending on budget considerations.

21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program

NAIST was selected by MEXT as a Center of Research and Education in two fields: Information Sciences, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Life Science. The program provides salary or research funding for students of the Doctoral Program.
As part of the program, 56 students were selected as Biological Science COE RAs in Life Science and 35 were selected as supported in Information, Electricity and Electronics in 2005.

As Biological Science COE in Life Science field:
900,000 yen in annual remuneration and 200.000 yen in research expenses
As Supported researchers in Information Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering field: 460,000-1,900,000 yen/year in remuneration.

Initiatives for Attractive Education in Graduate Schools

This is a project initiated by the MEXT in 2005 for nurturing young researchers with creative potential. The Initiatives have selected educational program in all three Graduate School: Information Science, Biological Sciences and Material Science. The project represents an organizational commitment to fostering of young researchers, enabling them to work on their research themes from a broader perspective and with creativity in the context of increasing specialization of science and technology.

Scholarships

1. Japan Student Services Organization scholarships
Loans are provided to students recognized to have both excellent academic achievements and scholastic difficulties for economic reasons through selection upon application by the individual.
Japan Student Services Organization scholarships include a non-interest type 1 scholarship program and the Kibo 21 Plan scholarship program. Repayment of loans received under the type 1 scholarship program may be entirely or partially exempted if the organization certifies that the recipient has achieved outstanding academic accomplishments while a student.

2. Other scholarships

Showa Education Promotion Foundation scholarships, MEXT self-supported foreign student scholarships, and other scholarship programs are also granted to NAIST.

 

Entrance Fee Exemption/Tuition Exemption

Students entering NAIST to whom any one of the following are eligible for the Entrance Fee/Tuition Exemption:
Students for whom the payment of entrance fee or/and tuition is difficult for economic reasons and who a recognized to have outstanding academic capabilities.

* Students for whom the payment of entrance fee or/and tuiton is difficult for economic reasons and who a recognized to have outstanding academic capabilities

* Students who are recognized of extreme difficulty in paying entrance fee or/and tuition due to the death the person having primary responsibility for the payment of their school expenses one year or less prior to admission or due to damage sustained by them or the person responsible for the payment of their expenses caused by wind, flood or other natural disaster.

Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research

This insurance program will provide the necessary insurance benefits when you get injured during your educational or research activities. It will pay insurance benefits for injury, disability, or death due to an accident that occurs in the cases such as while working on your regular curriculum activities, participating in extracurricular activities, insurance which is relatively inexpensive when you enter NAIST.


● Insurance premium: Lower-level doctoral course:

¥2,100 for 2 years for Master’s program students
¥3,050 for 3 years for Doctoral program students

Foundation for NAIST Subsides

Besides subsidies for research by assistance foundations, subsidies are provided to students for the presentation of research papers at International meetings (transportation, loading and other expenses). In FY2006, 22 students received such subsides.
