Dynamic faculty conducting interdisciplinary research

The Graduate School of Biological Sciences offers an exciting international research environment, with research groups led by dynamic faculty members undertaking advanced research to address fundamental questions in cellular and molecular biology, plant sciences, and systems biology. As in all NAIST’s graduate schools, there is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research, particularly in terms of the use of information science techniques in genomics and bioinformatics. This research is helping to clarify some of the basic phenomena of living things, leading to discoveries that will be of benefit to humanity in future. The Graduate School of Biological Sciences is one of the top institutes in Japan in attracting research funds, testifying to its high national and international reputation.

Advanced equipment available for student use

The facilities in the Graduate School of Biological Sciences are among the most advanced available for biological science research in Japan, and include sophisticated analytical equipment such as various kinds of high-spec mass spectrometers, confocal laser scanning microscopes, and a new-generation DNA sequencer. This shared equipment is available for student use, including periodic training sessions. New technology for research is generally installed as soon as it becomes available.

International links

The Graduate School of Biological Sciences has strong links with the University of California, Davis, with teaching staff from that institution visiting NAIST several times a year to give lectures and lead discussions. These two schools have also formed a network with the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with NAIST holding collaborative workshops and accepting students and researchers from both partner institutions.

Support for overseas students

Outstanding students and young researchers from other countries are strongly encouraged to apply to the Graduate School of Biological Sciences. The School provides financial support for doctoral students via the teaching assistant/research assistant system, with extra support for selected students who have the potential to become leading international scientists. Some new postdoctoral researchers are also employed as fellows for one year. Information on other scholarships and funding is readily available. There are opportunities for students to present the results of their research at international conferences. NAIST also offers a range of support for students from other countries, including on-campus dormitory accommodation, a mentoring system, help with visa and other immigration issues, and family support.
