Nara Institute of Science and Technology promotes gender equality and strives to provide a comfortable learning and working environment for all. After being selected to the Supporting Activities for Female Researchers for grants from MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology in 2009, NAIST established the gender equality promotion office, which has worked to improve the research environment at NAIST and establish a flexible system and framework to achieve a proper work-life balance for educational and research activities, as well as aspects of family life such as raising children. Although the grant ended in March 2012, NAIST is committed to continuing this unique project. We will establish a flexible system to reduce the various barriers and burdens specific to female students and staff, and we will work to realize WLB (work-life balance) of the staff and continue to further improve gender equality.
