abstractIn a polarization bistable surface emitting laser (30), a polarization-independent HCG that includes a two-dimensional lattice structure (37) formed in a surface SiO2 layer on a SOI substrate is used as a reflecting mirror below an active region, and a polarization-independent HCG that includes a two-dimensional lattice structure (38) of an airbridge structure is used as a reflecting mirror above the area. Since this HCG is significantly thin as compared with a conventional DBR, the surface emitting laser can be thinned. Further, optical waveguides (24x, 24y) are formed in the surface SiO2 layer and are optically coupled with a resonator of the surface emitting laser (30), whereby light confined in the resonator can be selectively output to one of the optical waveguides (24x, 24y), according to a polarization state of the confined light. Thereby, the transfer of information to an adjacent surface emitting laser (30) is facilitated, and optical elements arranged in a space above the surface emitting laser (30) can be reduced so that the surface emitting laser as a device can be thinned and made more compact in size.
