NAIST encourages exchange through the welcoming of Visiting Researchers to our campus for research and education activities based on the NAIST Visiting Researcher Acceptance Regulations.
Persons eligible for acceptance as a Visiting Researcher must be recognized as having the title of Professor, Associate Professor, (Full-time) Lecturer, Assistant Professor, or the equivalent, and must be one of the following.
- A researcher invited by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
- A researcher invited through an international exchange program of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
- A researcher invited through the Follow-up Research Fellowship of the Japanese Student Services Organization
- A researcher accepted through an exchange program of foreign government, international organization or other public organization
- In addition to the researcher stipulated in the previous item 4., a researcher deemed to be appropriate to promote international academic exchange

Acceptance procedure
- Please submit a "Visiting Researcher Letter of Recommendation" and "Visiting Researcher Application Form" to International Affairs Section, International Affairs Division (kokusai[at]ad.naist.jp).
【 Please note before submitting to International Affairs Section 】
（１）Before submitting the Letter of Recommendation, the host faculty member will need to receive the seal of his/her affiliation head, such as Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Director of each institutional Center or Director of the Institute for Research Initiatives.。
（２）When writing the international Visiting Researcher's name in English, PLEASE WRITE THE SURNAME (FAMILY NAME) in uppercase letters.
（３）Please submit financial support documents along with the above documents. - The title of a Visiting Professor can be given to those researchers who are deemed as having equivalent qualifications as professors of NAIST (Visiting Researcher Acceptance Regulations Article 6) If the researcher requests this title, please submit a "Letter of Recommendation for the Title of Visiting Professor Form" separately.
After acceptance approval
- The International Affairs Section will notify the host faculty member of the application results.
- A document certifying that the accepted researcher is engaged in (or plans to) performing research at NAIST can be issued upon request (For purposes such as application for certificate of residence status, nursery school procedures, etc.). If necessary, please contact International Affairs Section, International Affairs Division (kokusai[at]ad.naist.jp).
- International Visiting Researchers may use the on-campus mandala network system. The host faculty members directly apply to the Information Technology Center for accounts as an international Visiting Researchers. Request Account Registration
- If the acceptance period is less than 3 months, accepted researchers can receive a temporary visitor's entrance permit at each division office. If they wish, the host faculty member will apply directly to each division office. If the acceptance period is more than 3 months, a visitor's entrance permit with a facial photograph can be issued upon request by the International Affairs Section, International Affairs Division (kokusai[at]ad.naist.jp).
- If accepted researchers wish to change the acceptance period within one year, they must submit a " Visiting Researcher Request for Period of Stay Change (English / Japanese)" , for period extensions over 1 year, a " Visiting Researcher Request for Period of Stay Extension (English / Japanese)" , and if they decide to decline acceptance after approval, please submit a " Visiting Researcher Request for Cancellation (English / Japanese)" to the International Affairs Division, International Affairs Section (kokusai[at]ad.naist.jp).

Orientation and guidance for international scholars
Center for International Students and Scholars (CISS) provides individual orientations for international Visiting Researchers visiting Japan to provide information on administrative procedures and living in Japan. Please visit CISS to arrange an orientation to make the most of your stay in Japan, especially if staying longer.
