Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) invites applications for one tenure-track female faculty position (Associate Professor) based on the initiative of President's Vision 2030, which is dedicated to excellence and diversity of academic research by our faculty members, students, and researchers, campus-wide management for effective utilization and allocation of our university resources, and financial stability through diversified university revenue and bold investment in our education and research.
NAIST is seeking an excellent and ambitious candidate to be a world-leading female scientist who will promote cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research in the field of information science, biological science, materials science or their fused-field.

One tenure-track faculty position (Associate Professor)

5. Starting Date

April, 2022 (or the earliest possible date afterwards)

6. Tenure Track Term

Five Years (Within this term there will be a three-year evaluation and a five- year tenure review) to become a full permanent professor (Tenure review may be held at the mid-term evaluation if the appointee's performance is evaluated highly.)

Information Science, Biological Science, Materials Science or their fused-field.

8. Qualifications

  1. A female researcher who has excellent academic achievements in the above field
  2. Motivation to enthusiastically promote the education and research for the students at the Graduate School of Science and Technology, while performing frontier research

9. Selection Criteria

  1. A person deemed having enough career experience and ability in the field of Information Science, Biological Science, Materials Science or their fused-field. The appointee will be required to promote the education and research of students at Graduate School of Science and Technology, while performing frontier research.
  2. A person who can be expected to develop an original interdisciplinary field at Information Science, Biological Science, Materials Science or their fused-field and become an international leader in the field within three to five years.
  3. A person who demonstrating excellent character and insight.

10. Terms of Employment

  1. Workdays: Monday through Friday excluding the following holidays
  2. Holidays: Saturday, Sunday, national holidays, the end/beginning of the year and the anniversary of the founding of NAIST (October 1st)
  3. Working hours are left to the professor's discretion

11. Remuneration

Annual Salary Scheme (determined in accordance with the salary regulations of NAIST)

Employees' health insurance, employees' pension, workers' accident insurance and employment insurance

13. Research Support

  1. Start-up Allowance
    Up to JPY 10,000,000 in total within the first three fiscal years
  2. Research space: 18m2 at office area and 144m2 at research area.
  3. Facilities Available
    Common facility at NAIST are available, which are managed by Information Initiative Center, Research and Education Center for Genetic Information and Research and Education Center for Materials Science, including MANDARA-system as IT network, radiation facility, Animal Experimentation Facility, Botanical Greenhouses, Common Experimental Facilities (partially charged). The faculty is supported by technical staffs at these research supporting Centers (partially charged).
  4. Academic Support
    One post-doctorate researcher for the first three years
    Assignment of one or two mentor professors for advice and guidance for research, formation of intellectual property and education.

14. Tenure Review Criteria

  1. Satisfactory academic and research achievements (scientific papers, presentations in international and domestic conferences, research funding, guidance at student's thesis research, guidance at student's career track, etc.)
  2. Skilled laboratory management with good judgment and personality, demonstrating ability to serve as NAIST faculty.
  3. Expected to become an international leader in this field based on academic achievement, publication at conferences, activity at external organization and social cooperation.

  1. First selection: document screening
  2. Second selection: seminar and interview by faculty members.
