]]>On Tuesday, December 16, a delegation from the Thailand Hub of Talents in Microelectronic Design (THTMD）visited our university. During the courtesy visit, the delegation was welcomed by Dr. Shiozaki Kazuhiro (President), Dr. Ohta Jun (Executive Director/Vice President), Dr. Maki Hisaji (Deputy Director, Strategic Initiative for Global Leadership Development), Prof. Ajiro Hiroharu (Advisor to the President for International Affairs), Prof. Uraoka Yukiharu (Division of Materials Science), Prof. Sasagawa Kiyotaka (Division of Materials Science), Prof. Nakamura Masakazu (Division of Materials Science), Prof. Tomiya Shigetaka (Data Science Center), Assoc. Prof. Hara Kosuke (Division of Materials Science), and Assoc. Prof. Bermundo Juan Paolo Soria (URA, Strategic Initiative for Global Leadership Development).
In the opening address, Dr. Shiozaki emphasized our university's longstanding commitment to research in the fields of semiconductors and microelectronics, expressing his hope that this visit would open the door to future collaboration.
Following that, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Woradorn Wattanapanitch (a member of THTMD Working Group, Kasetsart University) introduced the organization and members of THTMD. He also described its role as a national hub for advancing research in microelectronics and outlined its initiatives beyond the boundaries of individual universities and institutions.
In a lively discussion on future collaborations, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Woradorn further explained the structure of THTMD, in which experts from multiple fields work together, and expressed his expectations for broad and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The delegation then toured facilities and laboratories specializing in Materials Science. During the tour, they discussed the potential for various forms of academic and research collaboration with NAIST faculty members.

During the meeting, Professor Wanchai expressed his gratitude for the J-PEAKS International Joint Symposium held the previous day.
He stated that Kasetsart University and our university have strengthened their relationship as close partners year after year, and expressed strong expectations for the future expansion of collaborative efforts in both education and research across fields such as computer engineering, agricultural biotechnology, and semiconductors. He also noted that these initiatives are meaningful not only for Kasetsart University but for Thailand as a whole.
Dr. Ohta highlighted that Kasetsart University has been one of NAIST's most strategically important partners. He touched upon topics including the acceptance of the first Kasetsart University students in 1995, the international academic exchange agreement concluded in 2010, the promotion of the double degree program, and the establishment of our university's Thai office within the university campus.
Following the meeting, commemorative gifts were exchanged between the two universities, providing an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of mutual cooperation between NAIST and Kasetsart University.
In the opening remarks, Dr. Jun Ohta, Executive Director and Vice President of NAIST; Professor Wanchai Yodsudjai, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at KU; Professor Teerapong Buaboocha, Dean of the Faculty of Biochemistry at CU; Mr. Tanimura, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Thailand; and Professor Matsumoto, Director of the NAIST Thailand Office, each spoke about the significance of academic exchange between Japan and Thailand, introduced the vision of J-PEAKS initiatives, and emphasized the importance of further strengthening relationships with universities in Thailand and other ASEAN countries.
In the first half the symposium, researchers from NAIST, KU, and CU delivered presentations showcasing the latest research findings in the fields of information science, biological science, and plant science. They shared distinctive research content and outcomes from each university, including system design from an architectural perspective, metabolic research on plant antioxidants, and functional food research using fruits like durian.
In the second half of the session, presentations were given on cutting-edge semiconductor development processes for AI applications in materials science, as well as practical examples of student-centered research promotion in nanomaterial development. The session also featured case studies between our university and partner universities in Thailand, reports on alumni association activities, and presentations by TNAA members. In the TNAA presentation, alumni specifically described how the knowledge and experience gained at our university are being applied in Thai industry and education, demonstrating that our educational collaboration has made a strong contribution to the career development of Thai graduates.
In closing remarks, Dr. Wanchai Pluempanupat, Dean of the Faculty of Science at KU, and Dr. Yuttakonkit Yuttakon, President of TNAA, expressed their gratitude for the symposium and shared their expectations for further strengthening the partnership in the future. Finally, Deputy Director of Strategic Initiative for Global Leadership Development, Dr. Maki delivered concluding remarks, emphasizing that the symposium would serve as an opportunity to further promote exchange and collaboration between our university and its partners in Thailand. Following the session, a networking reception was held, allowing participants to engage in discussion and reaffirmed the significance of international exchange of talent and knowledge in line with the J-PEAKS philosophy.
The official appointment ceremony was held on October 10, 2025, at NAIST.
Ms. Yap, originally from Singapore, is a trilingual professional fluent in English, Japanese, and Chinese. After graduating from the National University of Singapore (Psychology) and completing an exchange program at Kyoto University, she moved to Japan to pursue her career. Since joining Mori Kosan in 2019, she has been engaged in strengthening partnerships with domestic and international academic institutions and supporting international students seeking employment in Japan.
Mori Kosan Co., Ltd. is widely known for operating the multilingual platform WA.SA.Bi, which provides comprehensive support to international students across Japan in multiple languages. NAIST has long collaborated with Mori Kosan in various initiatives, including career seminars and international student guidance programs.
Ms. Yap has already been serving as a career counselor at NAIST since January 2025, offering personalized advice to international students on job-hunting and career development.
Her appointment as External Advisor reflects NAIST's strong commitment to promoting strategic recruitment and development of students from Southeast Asian countries, in line with the goals of the J-PEAKS initiative. Through her experience and network, Ms. Yap will serve as a bridge between universities, industries, and international communities, helping to expand career opportunities for NAIST students
Ms. Yap commented, "NAIST's international environment and strong research foundation are truly unique. I am honored to contribute to supporting global talents who will shape the future of science and technology in Japan."
With this appointment, NAIST will further enhance its partnership with Japanese industries and continue building a robust global career support system that connects universities, industry, and society.
