NAIST Top Global University Project Kick-Off Symposium was held on March 18, 2015

The NAIST Top Global University Project Kick-Off Symposium, entitled “Toward Establishing a Global Standard Graduate University: Cultivating Tomorrow’s Global Leaders in Advanced Science and Technology”, was held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015.

Under the banner of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)’s “Top Global University Project”, the symposium explored university internationalization, particularly as it pertained to graduate education in advanced science and technology. The event featured talks from leaders of NAIST’s key international partner institutions, who shared insights on common challenges and opportunities faced by leading, globally active universities.

President Ogasawara opened the event welcoming the speakers and those attending, and Mr. Hideto Matsumoto (Director of the Office for International Planning, Higher Education Policy Planning Division, Higher Education Bureau, MEXT) then offered greetings to the attendees. Dr. William B. Lacy (Founding Provost for International Programs and Professor, the University of California, Davis, USA) then delivered his keynote speech entitled on “Building Strategic International Partnerships for Success and Sustainability.”

The symposium also featured five main lecturers; Dr. Jose M. Cruz (Vice President for University and Global Relations, Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines) spoke on “”What Makes for a Global University”, Dr. Nguyen Van Noi (Rector, Hanoi University of Science, Vietnam) discussed “”Globalization of Higher Education in Vietnam and Institutional Implementation at Hanoi University of Science”, Dr. Anamai Damnet (Acting President, Kasetsart University, Thailand) introduced “Kasetsart University”, Dr. Thanya Kiatiwat (Director of Master of Engineering Program in Industrial Production Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, Thailand) explored “Academic Collaborative of Kasetsart University and Nara Institute of Science and Technology”, and Dr. Dwikorita Karnawati (Rector and Professor, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia) elaborated on “Science and Technology for the Future of Indonesia’s Sustainable Community.” Vice President Kataoka closed the event with a presentation on NAIST’s approach to the “Top Global University Project”.

The event was open to the public and attended by many NAIST faculty/staff/students and visitors who were interested in NAIST’s internationalization efforts.
