Overview of SIGL

With Japan facing an inevitable population decline ahead, talented international students are indispensable to the sustainable development of Japanese society and economy. Within this context, NAIST has been selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's (MEXT) FY2024 “Program for Forming Japan’s Peak Research Universities (J-PEAKS)”. J-PEAKS is a program designed to enhance Japan's overall research capabilities and promote the creation of new value. It operates alongside support for internationally outstanding research universities through the University Fund, aiming to form a cluster of research universities that will drive the development of Japan's overall research strength.

In this selection, NAIST was particularly recognized for its proven track record of achieving a high proportion of international student while meeting enrollment targets among Japan's science and engineering universities. This was accomplished through strategic and systematic collaboration with the top 15 universities in Southeast Asia, allowing the university to attract a large number of outstanding international students.

SIGL will leverage the foundation established through J-PEAKS to strengthen international collaborative education with top graduate schools, expand the global perspectives and personal networks of both international and Japanese students, and enhance the appeal of studying at NAIST. This will reinforce our ability to attract highly talented international students while establishing an international campus that leads cutting-edge scientific research through collaboration that transcends ethnic, religious, and cultural differences. We are advancing initiatives aimed at making NAIST a graduate university that drives social transformation by development of doctoral talent in a society facing a declining working-age population.
