Using the Academic Assistant System

AA Ms. Tomiko Manabe

I first heard about this system through a university-wide email in March 2015. My partner was due to give birth in April, but since she was born urgently in February, I was unable to do much research in March. When things calmed down a bit in April, I remembered the email and applied for the internship, which was accepted in June 2015. I have been assigned for about 8 months so far, and this program has been indispensable for my research. I have been assigned to this position for about 8 months so far, and it has been indispensable for my research because I work more flexibly than my partner, so when my child had a fever, I had to take time off. In total, I have taken about 10 days off per year.

Because our research focuses on the final stage of the life cycle of living organisms, reproduction, there is a lot of preparatory work for experiments that requires a lot of planning and continuity. If someone is suddenly unable to come to work, having someone who can do the preparatory work in their place means that the two months we have to wait for growth will not be wasted.
We have asked Mr. Manabe of AA to work on the pollination of plants and the microscopic recording of the process. For example, we ask him to collect data by repeating two hours of filming per day, for a total of two hours of filming per day, every day. This work requires dexterity and perseverance, and Ms. Manabe is well suited for the job. We plan to ask Mr. Manabe to continue working with us in 2016.

As a scientist, I often have the opportunity to write proposals, not only for this program. I write applications very seriously and with the belief that they will be rigorously evaluated, so I think it is inevitable that they will be properly evaluated and rejected. For example, the acceptance or rejection of a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research is based on the results of the evaluation of various items, right? In the application form for this program, there is a section that describes achievements as well as the current situation regarding childcare, etc. I think it is inevitable that the application will be rejected after proper evaluation. Including this section, I believe that priority will be given to those who take more time for childcare and those who seem to have more promising research results, but I wonder how this evaluation will be done.
