Using Temporary Childcare Services

Associate Professor Masayuki Kanbara, Ambient Intelligence Laboratory(Hagita Lab.), Division of Information Science

I have three children in the 6th, 5th, and 1st grades of elementary school. Since about 2010, when my oldest was 3 years old, I have been using the temporary childcare service on the days I go to work for the open campus. I first learned about the service through a campus-wide email. My wife did not work and could take care of our child at home, but our oldest child was 3 years old and the youngest was 2 years old, which was the most difficult time in raising a child.
Since we live in a staff dormitory, we were close to the "Sentan" day care center, which made us feel safe in terms of being able to pick up our child immediately if something happened on the day we left him there. The reason for the decrease in the number of users in recent years may be that the number of children living in the dormitory itself is decreasing. Until 7 or 8 years ago, there were almost 20 children living in the dormitory, but recently the number has been in the single digits, and conversely, the proportion of children of international students has been increasing.

I think that both faculty members and international students with small children should definitely take advantage of the temporary childcare service.
