Receiving Start-up Research Funds for Women Researchers

Assistant Professor Tamako Nishimura, Division of Biological Sciences, Labolatory of Molecular Medicine and Cell Biology (Suetsugu Lab)

I arrived at the university in May 2017, and since my lab was almost fully equipped with the necessary experimental equipment, I mainly used the grant to purchase a laptop and reagents for my research. For example, I purchased primers for plasmid construction and reagents for cell staining. I am grateful that this grant allowed me to purchase reagents that are easy to use and to perform experiments that require a little more effort, so that I could start my experiments smoothly.

When I was informed about this program by the Equal Opportunity Office prior to my arrival, I felt as if they were welcoming me to the university, and I believe that this was also a driving force in my research in the lab. In the process of writing the application for this program, I was also glad that I was able to set a theme and purpose for my first project at the university, as well as a goal for one year after the grant period ends. I am glad that the grant period has been extended from one year to two years, starting with the 2019 academic year, because my first year at the university passed too quickly and I did not have time to spare.
