Subsidy for Use of Babysitter Fee (Cabinet Office)

Assistant Professor Tamako Nishimura, Division of Biological Science, Laboratory of Molecular Medicine and Cell Biology (Suetsugu Lab)

I commute to work from my home in Kobe. When I first arrived at my new position, my child was attending a day-care center and I was unable to pick her up before pick-up time, so I was able to use the babysitter fee subsidy (provided by the Cabinet Office) to take her between the day-care center and my home on weekday evenings and to look after her after she returned home. We were very grateful to the Gender Equality Office for consulting with us about which sitter company to use, etc. We have used this program for about one year and it has been very helpful.

My child started elementary school in April of this school year, but I still cannot make it in time to pick up my child in the evening at the school childcare center. Public school childcare services do not provide transportation for children, close as soon as there is a weather warning, and have shortened hours during the summer vacation, which makes it very difficult to work. Therefore, I entered a private childcare center that provides transportation between home and school, childcare during long vacations, and support during weather warnings and class closings. However, it is very expensive. It may be difficult to find a way to provide financial aid for children after they enter elementary school, but I would be very grateful if there was some financial assistance.
