Receiving Start-up Research Funds for Women Researchers

Tran Thi Hong, Assistant Professor, Sustainable Computing Architecture Laboratory(Nakashima Lab.), Division of Information Sciences

After I was hired by the university, Dr. Nakajima (in my current lab) told me that I could use this research grant. I was still a graduate student at the time, so I prepared my application with Dr. Nakajima's advice. I used the research grant to purchase equipment, attend conferences, purchase the simulator tool MATLAB license, and pay an honorarium when I accepted a student from Vietnam as a co-researcher. With the support of this research grant, our research plan is progressing smoothly. As a result, we were able to publish two papers. I was also able to attend research meetings to gather information. Thank you very much for your support.

As for my opinion on the research grant system, it was difficult for me to decide what to buy with the research grant in the period before and after my arrival because I did not know what the research environment at our university was like before I came to my new position. The grant period is set at one year from the date of arrival, but if the grant period was set at one year from six months after arrival or two years after arrival, for example, I would have been able to use the grant where it should be used.

As a woman, I am glad to have the support of this research grant. I think start-up research funding is also needed for male faculty, but the number of male faculty is larger than the number of female faculty, and I think there may be a difficult situation regarding whether the university budget can support all male faculty or not.
