Grant Proposals
The Division for Research Strategy provides support for application form preparation, mock interviews, mock hearings, etc. for various external funds.
Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research
Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research are competitive funds that are intended to significantly develop all scientific research (research based on the free ideas of the researcher), from basic to applied research in all fields, ranging from the humanities and the social sciences to the natural sciences. The grants provide financial support for creative and pioneering research projects that will become the foundation of social development. The research projects are selected using a peer-review screening process (screening by multiple researchers whose field of specialization is close to that of the applicant).
URAs provide on-campus explanatory sessions and support application form preparation.
JST Strategic Basic Research Programs
The purpose of Strategic Basic Research Programs is to promote challenges to basic research to overcome the problems facing our country and to produce creative and innovative technology seeds (new technology seeds) based on new scientific knowledge that will lead to scientific and technological innovations to transform society and the economy.
URAs support application form preparation and conduct mock interviews.
Fusion Oriented Research for disruptive Science and Technology (FOREST)
In order to promote FOREST program aiming to create seeds that lead to disruptive innovation through diversity and fusion without setting specific projects or short-term goals, this program provides long-term support for unrestricted, challenging and fusion-oriented diverse research not bound by the existing frameworks.
URAs support application form preparation and conduct mock interviews.
Issue setting / project type projects (Cabinet Office, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, NEDO, etc.)
In order to achieve the goals set by the national government, ministries and agencies and related organizations are planning national projects. Universities are also expected to solve the problems by developing research results based on their own knowledge. We will promote and support various projects which are expected to develop and expand NAIST's research, such as improving and expanding the research environment, technical demonstration, and social implementation of research results, and promotion of regional industry-government-academia collaborative development.
URA performs support such as explanatory session, intelligence, application proposal making and evaluation meetings, and other follow-ups.
International Collaboration
Promoting and strengthening research collaboration with overseas institutions
The Division for Research Strategy promotes international collaborative research to strengthen NAIST’s research capabilities. The division facilitates human and research networks with overseas research institutions at both the organizational and individual levels.
Survey and Analysis for International Collaborative Research to Enhance NAIST’s Research Capabilities
We conduct surveys and analyses to promote new collaborative research with overseas research institutions. In addition, we explore foreign institutions to establish International Satellite Laboratories and also foreign researchers to invite to International Collaborative Laboratories in NAIST.
Establishing International Satellite Laboratories as Overseas Research Bases
We perform negotiations and signing agreements with research institutes for the establishment of International Satellite Laboratories in foreign countries and provide support for activities related to the laboratories
Inviting Renowned Researchers from Overseas to Set Up International Collaborative Laboratories in NAIST
We perform negotiations and signing agreements with research institutes for the establishment of International Collaborative Laboratories in NAIST and provide support for activities related to the laboratories.
Planning and Running International Symposiums with Overseas Institutions
We organize international symposiums both in Japan and overseas to facilitate collaborative research with foreign institutions.
International Public Relations
We publish research outcomes through online news services and NAIST Research Highlights in order to publicize beyond Japan the research being conducted at NAIST.

Project of Discover and Nurture Young Researchers
As part of "Project to Discover and Nurture Young Researchers" in the program for promoting the enhancement of research universities, we are actively recruiting young researchers who are engaged in ambitious research, with the goal of developing world-leading research areas in five or 10 years. Through the "tenure track system" which fosters independent young researchers, we have established a system to recruit and hire young researchers from around the world who will become the pillar of our university in the future, and will work to strengthen our international competitiveness by taking into account not only domestic researchers but also foreign researchers.
This system is unique in that it gives young researchers, who are engaged in ambitious research in order to create pioneering research fields, the position and research environment of an independent researcher as an associate professor of tenure track, and after five years of tenure review, they are appointed as professors who will lead the future of our university.
The Tenure Track Laboratory established in this project will be operated within the New Project Laboratory, the Department for Innovation Research, the Division for Research Strategy, and will also serve as a prospective division and will be involved in the management of the division, including the acceptance of students.
Project of Strategic Research Team-Reinforce
"Project of Strategic Research Team-Reinforce" provides priority support for the strategic development of world-leading research teams.
We will assign post-doc researchers or specially appointed assistant professors as research staff to research teams that are achieving particularly outstanding research results and that NAIST particularly wants to achieve dramatic growth, in order to develop human resources and research capabilities for the future. Currently, research teams are selected for each of the three divisions of Information Science, Biological Science, and Materials Science, and research staff are assigned.

Interdisciplinary Research
Next Generation Interdisciplinary Research Project
Among the 2nd mid-term goals of the university, the basic goal of the university, ‘deepening and expanding the basic and socially related academic fields, “information science”, “biological science”, and “materials science”’ is listed. In order to cultivate new interdisciplinary and integrated fields that anticipate the next generation, and actively develop world-leading research activities, we have accept research proposals based on faculty brainstorming that transcends the boundaries of divisions from FY 2010. We have promoted it as a "Next Generation Interdisciplinary Research Project".
Network Development Workshops for Young Researchers
In FY 2010, we started the “NAIST Colloquium for Future-Pioneering” with the aim of supporting activities for demonstrating leadership while building new networks with young researchers in Japan and overseas. Furthermore, based on this project, we started the “Interdisciplinary Research Workshop” in FY 2015, which focuses on the development of new research areas and the deepening of each research field. In FY2021, “Network Development Workshop for Young Researchers” has been started with the aim of not only interaction with researchers in different fields, but also interaction with researchers on cutting-edge research that contributes to the creation of innovations.
Regional Collaboration
The world-class research is no longer possible on its own, and cooperation among regional, government, and academia is expected to lead to the development of science and technology innovation. In the Kinki area, it is expected that the research results accumulated mainly by universities will be developed, such as the development of the Kansai Science City (Keihanna Science City) based on the Kinki Area Basic Development Plan. Aiming at creation of sustained innovation, promotion of fixation of research complex and new cooperation, cooperation development, new business promote the ecosystem formation for development of regional economy by support of company, collaboration with local public institution.
