Development of anti-cancer drugs without side effects
The Kato Laboratory (Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology, TCB) is conducting
research to identify cancer cell-specific properties such as cancer cell
proliferation, differentiation, and survival, and elucidate their molecular
mechanisms. Based on these findings, our ultimate goal is to develop anticancer
drugs with minimal side effects. Their research areas include cell cycle,
cell death, cell differentiation, cancer stem cells, and cancer metabolism.

Message from Jun Kato
The Kato Laboratory was established in May 2001 as the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology (TCB) at the Graduate School of Biological Sciences, Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST). Up until March 2024, 90 master's students and 8 doctoral students graduated. During this period, we published 86 research papers with a total of 6,096 citations (an average of 71 citations per paper). On March 31, 2024, I retired and became Professor Emeritus. However, feeling unfulfilled as a researcher, I decided to remain active in the field and was appointed as Professor again from April 1, 2024. The Kato Lab is now re-established as the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology (TCB) at the Institute for Research Initiatives (IRI), Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST). For me, science remains incredibly fascinating, and I intend to continue conducting experiments and advancing research as much as possible. It's a privilege to be on the frontline and observe cutting-edge developments. Moving forward, I will focus on research and dedicate myself to the development of anti-cancer drugs without side effects. To all concerned parties, I ask for your continued support. Thank you very much.
