Prediction of depression using machine learning

Why I chose NAIST

The main reason I wanted to go to NAIST was its wide open doors. Although I was a liberal arts major in college, I had the opportunity to study a completely different field, computer science. At first, I was worried whether I would be able to keep up, but the classes and lab activities helped me supplement my foundation, and now I am doing the research I wanted to do. I was also attracted by the large number of entrance exams. When I was an undergraduate, I was overseas, so I had problems with the timing of graduate school entrance exams and my return to Japan, but NAIST has three (July, October, and March), so I can take the exam whenever I want.

In my lab, I am conducting research on predicting depression based on a person's lifestyle, personality, and temperament. Specifically, we collect data from each subject using a questionnaire and extract important features for predicting depression using machine learning such as random forests.

1. Each student will be provided with a desktop and laptop computer.

2. A meeting room is available for students to practice their presentations.

3. In this lab, each student's desk is arranged in a Y shape to facilitate communication between students.

Laboratory Events

We have many events such as year-end party, welcome party, farewell party, seminar camp, ski camp, etc. At the seminar camp, M1 students and other students present their research and have a party in the evening.

Internship

Yahoo! JAPAN Research Institute, D&S Division, Yahoo! Japan Corporation

This is a long-term internship where students conduct research with the goal of presenting a paper. It is a very valuable experience for us to touch the development of actual deployed applications and to use log data collected through applications and services for our research.

More body than brain!

We have a gym on campus and I often use the running machines. I also enjoy playing soccer and tennis with my lab members on the campus courts.

For future graduate students

The number of female students enrolled in the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology is particularly small, but because of this small number, we hold women's parties where all the women get together. Also, male students think of us as friends of the same sex, so we get along well with male students. Since the area around the university is rural, we don't have to dress up to go to the university, and we don't feel uncomfortable at all. (I go to school in jersey every day lol).
