Why I chose NAIST

As an undergraduate, I was a member of the Contemporary Sociology Department, where I was introduced to programming and statistics in class. From there, I got involved in programming and won the CDMC2015 International Data Mining Competition, which I participated in as a team in my third year as an undergraduate, as the youngest participant. This experience made me want to learn more about machine learning theory, data analysis, and applying machine learning to real data. I then changed my major to computer science in graduate school.
I applied to NAIST because it had a lab working on biological signals, which I had been interested in for a long time, and because when I observed a seminar in the Mathematical Informatics Laboratory, I heard enthusiastic discussions and comments from the professors and students, and felt their enthusiasm and energy for their research. I chose the Mathematical Informatics Laboratory because I wanted to do research in this laboratory and under these professors. Also, the Graduate School of Information Science at NAIST offers a wide range of basic and specialized courses, and it was attractive to me that I could take courses in areas that I could not study as an undergraduate.

Introduction to our lab.

The Mathematical Informatics Laboratory conducts research on the human body as a system, from cells to driving behavior, and elucidates and applies the basic principles through mathematical models. Machine learning" to extract information from a large amount of data, "bio-mathematics" to clarify biological phenomena through mathematical models, and "signal processing" to apply the models to engineering are the three pillars of this fusion area.

International exchange

The Mathematical Informatics Laboratory to which I belong has many international students. Therefore, seminars and presentations are held in English. This summer, I went to the Gion Festival with international students. We also had a yakiniku party with everyone in the lab and deepened our relationship.

Conference Presentation

27th National Neural Network Society of Japan (JNNS2017)

In September of my first year as a master's student, I presented my research entitled "Analysis of Canine Experts' Gaze Behavior During Doc Training Viewing". At this conference, I was able to attend research presentations from a wide range of fields related to neural information processing, including physiology, psychology, mathematical modeling, and machine learning.

ImPACT Tough Robotics Challenge 6th Open Field Evaluation Meeting

A meeting was held at the Fukushima Robot Test Field to report the results of our research on disaster relief robots. We demonstrated our cyber rescue dog and reported our research results.

For prospective graduate students

If you have even the slightest desire to do research or study at NAIST, I do not want you to give up your higher education because you are a woman, because you are a liberal arts student, or because your parents are against it. Because when you make a decision based on someone else's words, you often unconsciously neglect your own feelings. I think this will lead to regrets in the future. If you face yourself and enter NAIST with determination, you will not only acquire knowledge and skills, but also gain invaluable experience through research.
The Graduate School of Information Science and Technology is home to a wide variety of people, including people like me who are changing fields, international students, and people with work experience. Spending time with people from different backgrounds has been a constant source of surprise and learning, and has broadened my horizons.
I will forever treasure the days I spent with these people in my research life.
