Why I chose NAIST

Although I was able to conduct my research as an undergraduate in an environment with sufficient experimental facilities, I decided to enter NAIST because I wanted to conduct my research in an even better environment. Also, almost all students in the field of biotechnology are allowed to choose their laboratory after entering NAIST, so I was attracted by the fact that I could think about my field and research topic while taking basic courses after entering NAIST.
Another reason was that the three graduate schools were merged into seven programs this year, making it easier to conduct research that includes chemistry, physics, and information fields even within the same biotechnology field, and allowing students to conduct research from a broad perspective. In fact, I wanted to study chemistry and physics as well as biotechnology, so I chose the Bionano Science and Engineering Program, which is a fusion program of bioscience and material creation science.

Introduction to our lab.

Life consists of cells. The main component of the cell membrane that forms these cells is lipids. In this lab, we study various life phenomena by clarifying the interactions between various lipid membranes and various proteins through experiments using purified lipids, recombinant proteins, and cultured cells.

Each of us has a research topic and conducts experiments on a daily basis.
Each person is provided with a PC necessary for DNA analysis and space for a laboratory table where they conduct their experiments. Microscopes and other experimental equipment are very well equipped. We currently have five international students and will have two more in September. (All international students are female.)

Daily life

I live in a shared house about 20 minutes by bus from the school. My roommates are professionals and students from other universities, and there are not many NAIST students who live in a shared house like me.
My friends who live in apartment complexes near the dormitory commute to school by bike or on foot. There are grocery stores and supermarkets nearby, so it is convenient for daily life.
I sometimes eat lunch at the school cafeteria or buy lunch at the store, but I try to cook for myself as much as possible by making my own lunch.

For prospective graduate students

The Biology Department has the highest percentage of female students in NAIST, with 1/3 of all students being female. In addition, there is orientation and classes after admission, so there are plenty of opportunities to make friends. The facilities on campus are very well equipped, and in addition to research facilities, there is a health center, gymnasium, and basketball and tennis courts that can be easily used. Although the life of a graduate student is only two years in the master's program, the environment is well prepared for students to devote themselves fully to their research as if they were "training".
