For Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Students

International students on Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship must complete specific procedures to receive their scholarship payment each month.

Necessary Procedures

Opening a Japan Post Bank Account

A Japan Post Bank account is required for receiving your scholarship. Please open your account immediately after your arrival in Japan.

Submit a Copy of Your Passbook

Once your account is open, submit a copy of your passbook -- including the cover page and the page with your account number -- to the International Student Affairs Section. We will register this information on the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) website for scholarship payments.

Procedures after Arrival

After arriving, you must complete several procedures, including applying for reimbursement of travel expenses. You will receive instructions by e-mail from the International Student Affairs Section based on MEXT guidelines. Please check your e-mail regularly for updates.

Confirming Your Enrollment

Each month, you will be asked to visit the International Student Affairs Section to sign a ledger confirming your enrollment. The specific dates will be notified to you by e-mail.

Additional Notes

Monthly Procedures Required to Receive Scholarship Funds

Students receiving scholarship must sign monthly to confirm their enrollment. Please be aware that you will be unable to receive your scholarship if you miss the period when you are supposed to sign for any reason, such as an extended trip overseas. If you will be away during the period when you are to sign, please notify the International Student Affairs Section beforehand. If you stay outside Japan from the first to the last day of any given month, in principle, the scholarship cannot be paid.

Extending Your Scholarship Period

When research students proceed to the master's or doctoral courses, they must apply for a scholarship extension. The scholarship duration is the standard term of study for the respective course and is not extended within the same course.
Scholarship extension is possible when proceeding to the doctoral course during the standard term of study. However, please understand that extensions are extremely limited. Please be sure to plan your studies carefully under the guidance of your supervising professor.
Please notify the International Student Affairs Section as early as possible if you plan to complete the course in a shorter time than the standard term of study and be aware of the subsequent change in the timing of the extension application.
