Administrative Staff Training Session for Services in English held in cooperation with Nara Women's University（2022/12/20）
On December 20th, Robert King (UEA) of the Center for International Students and Scholars (CISS) led the Administrative Staff Training Session for Services in English held at the Nara Women's University (NWU) Collaboration Center. Since being selected for the Top Global University Program in 2014, NAIST has increased its efforts to develop its global campus, including the establishment of CISS to offer a wide variety of support for international students, scholars and their families.
This seminar was requested by NWU to introduce CISS's efforts and accomplishments, and points for providing English services to help improve the English service ability of staff that regularly offers support for international students and to facilitate the expansion international student support services on campus. Twelve NWU staff members that use English and/or interact with international students often attended the seminar.
The seminar opened with a warm-up question about the participants' image of the US and Americans to get everyone talking and was followed by Mr. King introducing his background and why he was there to speak. Entering into the main part of the seminar, Mr. King introduced specific international community support activities and accomplishments while discussing the issues that still face NAIST as it develops and pointed out important communication tips. The participants also had groupwork that was focused on identifying and sharing issues concerning communication and information dissemination for international students at NWU.
Many participants were particularly interested in NAIST's email communications for international students which are almost entirely written in both English and Japanese, and in the fact that NAIST was able to standardize this over a 5-year period by accumulating templates for emails with Mr. King's assistance, which has led to a drastic drop in the requests for translations or proofreading throughout NAIST.
NAIST will continue to disseminate the knowledge and experience we have achieved through the Top Global University Program to facilitate globalization at other universities and in the community.
