interACT Signing Ceremony and Commemorative Lectures (April 9, 2012)

The interACT (The International Center for Advanced Communication Technologies) signing ceremony and commemorative lectures were held at NAIST on April 9, 2012.

interACT is an organization which supports mutual research and educational exchanges, led by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) and Carnegie Mellon University (USA). NAIST is participating in interACT to establish a firm foundation in education and research in cooperation with world-renowned research universities and institutions in the field of information technology.

The commemorative lectures started with opening remarks from Dr. Akira Isogai (President, NAIST) and Dr. Horst Hippler (President, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology). After the opening remarks, presentations were made by Dr. Alexander Waibel (Professor, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Dr. Rüdiger Dillmann (Professor, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Dr. Satoshi Nakamura (Professor, Graduate School of Information Science, NAIST) and Dr. Tsukasa Ogasawara (Professor, Graduate School of Information Science, NAIST). After the commemorative lectures, the signing ceremony commenced with both presidents giving their signatures. Dr. Masakatsu Fujie (Professor, Waseda University) and Dr. Eiichiro Sumita (Director, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology), both from interACT participating institutions , also attended this ceremony and commemorative lectures. The ceremony was a great success, with people standing in the aisles to listen to the event.

After the signing ceremony, the guests visited the Mathematical Informatics Laboratory, the Robotics Laboratory and the Augmented Human Communication Laboratory, receiving explanations of the research carried out there from Assoc. Prof. Shibata, Prof. Ogasawara and Prof. Nakamura.

Preceding the signing ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Hippler, Dr. Alexander Waibel and Dr. Rüdiger Dillmann made a courtesy visit to NAIST President Akira Isogai. They introduced their university, shared information and exchanged opinions concerning future exchanges and activities. After the visit, the guests exchanged opinions with Graduate School of Information Science faculty members.(Dean Kotaro Minato, Prof. Yuji Matsumoto, Prof. Satoshi Nakamura and Prof. Tsukasa Ogasawara)

This occasion was a beneficial opportunity to strengthen relationships and encourage future cooperation among Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, other institutions participating in interACT and NAIST.
