Assistant to the President for Gender Equality, Professor of Information Science, Michiko Inoue

A workplace that is easy for women to enter will lead to the recruitment of excellent human resources.

About 10 years ago, several female faculty members at the time were having a very difficult time balancing child-rearing and research, so we decided to do something about it and applied for the "Female Researcher Support Model Development Project" funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). After the project was selected, we initiated various measures, and in particular, our Academic Assistant System, which provides research assistants to researchers who are pregnant or raising children, became a pioneer among other universities. The efforts of the Office of Participation have continued even after the project ended, and it can be said that the awareness and understanding of gender equality among faculty and staff has improved year by year.。
In the past, the goal of gender equality was "to help those in need," but recently I think it has changed to "we cannot secure excellent human resources unless we make the workplace more accessible to women. In order to secure excellent human resources, it is also necessary to have open recruitment for women only. This is because, as the concept of "affirmative action" suggests, minorities need to be treated generously. Currently, the low proportion of women in the workforce makes it difficult for women to enter the industry, so I would like to start by increasing the proportion, even if only slightly. Japan's research capabilities will decline if we are unable to fully utilize our excellent human resources, so I believe that increasing the proportion of women in one of the national universities is an urgent task.

Making the research profession attractive
~Initiatives as an "Iku-boss"~

When my children went to daycare or school, I had to run to pick them up every day at 6:00 p.m., cook dinner when I got home, put the children to bed, and resume work at 9:00 p.m. The professor of the lab I was in at the time did not say anything when I had to take a sudden leave due to my child's fever, and it was easy for me to work. In the field of information systems, there are not many restrictions on research locations, so as long as I could work elsewhere, there was no problem. I think it is natural for both men and women to leave work to take care of their children, and I do not think that work prevents me from raising my children.
The current faculty members in my lab would be working all the time if they were left alone, so I try my best to say, "Let's go home. In the future, the research profession will have to compete with other professions without taking advantage of the enthusiasm of people like them who do a tremendous amount of work. I think it is important to try to create a good working environment so that the university can attract good human resources.
